Abstract

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of chemicals that ubiquitous and toxic pollutants. They result from incomplete combustion of oil, gas, wood or other organic substances such as tobacco or baked goods. Benzo(a)Pyrene (BaP) is one of the PAHs components that can cause carcinogenesis. Bangunbangun (Plectranthus amboinicus L. Spreng) contains of flavonoids, quercetin, saponins and apigenin that is function as antioxidants, anticancer and immunostimulants. The purpose of this study was to look at the kidney histology of rat (Rattus norvegicus) exposed to Benzo(a)pyrene and Bangunbangun (Plectranthus amboinicus L. Spreng) leaves ethanol extract. This experiment used a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatments and repeated six times. The treatments consisted of control group (KK), BaP group (KB), EEDB group (KE) and BaP and EEDB group (KBE). This research was conducted for 22 days,the BaP induction was given everyday 0.4 mg/rat and the ethanol of Bangunbangun leaves extract (EEDB) induced by 500 mg/Kg body weight one hour after BaP induction. Histopathology using the hematoxylin and eosin staining method. Histological observations of the kidneys is diameter of the glomerular. The data was obtained and analyzed by One Way ANOVA test and DMRT follow-up test. The results showed that ethanol of Bangunbangun (Plectranthus amboinicus L. Spreng) leaves extract was significantly able to improve the histological structure of the kidney in the form of a decrease in glomerular diameter (p≤0.05). This research concluded that the ethanol extract of Bangunbangun (Plectranthus amboinicus L. Spreng) leaves can repair the structure of rat kidney.
