Abstract

This Private Senior High School is situated in the vicinity of a palm oil mill, an area highly susceptible to air pollution. This condition impedes the optimal development of students environmental awareness within the school setting. This deficiency is evidenced by prevalent behaviors, including the use of motorcycles for short-distance travel, the habitual consumption of beverages in single-use packaging, and inadequate waste segregation skills. This study employed a quantitative descriptive methodology, utilizing a total sampling technique involving 90 tenth-grade students. Data were collected through observation sheets and questionnaires, which were subsequently analyzed using percentage calculations to categorize the students' levels of environmental awareness. The findings indicate that, overall, the students' environmental awareness ranges from moderate to high levels of concern. Environmental stewardship achieved the highest percentage (87.61%), categorized as highly concerned, whereas carbon emission reduction recorded the lowest percentage (65.77%), categorized as moderately concerned. These findings highlight a discrepancy between the students' theoretical knowledge and their practical application. Consequently, there is a crucial need to strengthen sustainable school programs by engaging the active participation of the entire school community, ensuring that environmental awareness is not merely comprehended theoretically but also manifested in daily behavioral practices.
