School environmental cleanliness is an essential element in creating a comfortable and conducive learning atmosphere. The main issues examined in this study are the low awareness among elementary school students regarding the importance of separating organic and inorganic waste, as well as their lack of understanding of the role of organisms in maintaining environmental balance. This study aims to analyze the importance of waste sorting activities and the role of organisms in maintaining environmental sustainability in elementary schools. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a phenomenological approach, including a literature review of various journal sources, books, and relevant findings on waste management and the role of decomposing organisms in the environment. Based on the review of various literature, the introduction and practice of waste management need to be carried out continuously both at school and at home. It is known that introducing waste sorting activities from an early age can increase students’ awareness both in the school environment and within their families. Proper waste sorting has been proven to reduce environmental pollution, improve recycling efficiency, and support the natural composting process. Decomposing organisms such as bacteria, fungi, and earthworms play a role in the composting process. Decomposing organisms play a crucial role in accelerating the decomposition of organic matter and improving soil quality.
