Abstrak

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the scientific literacy skills of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 35 Medan on the Environmental Pollution sub-topic. This type of research is a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest-posttest Nonequivalent Control Group Design with quantitative research methods. The population in this study were all seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 35 Medan in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research sample was selected by purposive sampling consisting of one experimental class and one control class with a total of 30 sample respondents. Data collection techniques were carried out using pre-research observations, interviews with seventh-grade science teachers, conducting written tests in the form of multiple-choice questions to students and documentation during the study. Based on the results of the t-test, the Sig. (1-tailed) value was obtained at 0.000 so that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. The results of scientific literacy abilities were included in the "high" criteria with an average value of 83.73% in the competency aspect and 84.14% in the knowledge aspect. Based on the results, it was concluded that the application of the Problem Based Learning model had an effect on the scientific literacy skills of class VII students at SMP Negeri 35 Medan in the environmental pollution sub-material.
