Abstrak

This study aims to determine the differences in critical thinking skills between students taught using the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model and the Discovery Learning (DL) model on the topic of ecosystems at SMA Negeri 6 Medan. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group design, involving two Grade X classes as the research sample. Experimental Class I used the problem based learning model, while Experimental Class II used the discovery learning model. The instruments used to measure critical thinking skills were essay-based tests, critical thinking observation sheets, and learning model implementation observation sheets. The pre-test results indicated that both classes had relatively equivalent initial abilities, with a significance value of 0.145 > 0.05, meaning H0 was accepted. However, the post-test results revealed a significant difference between the two groups. The average post-test score of the problem based learning class was 81.66, while the discovery learning class scored 75.06. The independent sample t-test yielded a sig. (2- tailed) value of < 0.001 < 0.05, indicating that H0 was rejected and Ha was accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in critical thinking skills, whereby students taught using the problem based learning model demonstrated higher critical thinking abilities compared to those taught using the discovery learning model.
